UIC fighters capture Somalia's Hiiran

Sat, 13 Sep 2008

Fighters
from the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) and Jabhad al-Islamiya have
captured Somalia's Hiiran region from Ethiopian soldiers.

Ethiopian soldiers abandoned at least 17 positions in the town of
BaladWeyn in Hiiran after the insurgents' attack, leaving behind
military vehicles and caches of ammunition, Press TV correspondent
reported.

People in the Hiiran region have expressed surprise over the
Ethiopian soldiers' decision to easily abandon their bases in
BaladWeyn, our correspondent added.

UIC and its armed wing al-Shabbab fighters captured the southern
port city of Kismayu in August after heavy fighting with the Mareehan
clan in which 61 people, including 18 civilians, died.

The US-backed Ethiopian soldiers were deployed to Somalia in 2006
to back the transitional federal government of President Abdullahi
Yusuf Ahmed.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said last Month that the
Ethiopian troops were to leave Somalia and withdraw their support for
the country's government after facing fierce resistance from the UIC
fighters.

However, Ethiopian forces, who are held responsible for the death
of thousands of civilians in the warn-torn country, have called
Zenawi's promises into question, saying they will stay and fight with
Somali insurgents.

Somali parliamentarians have accused Ethiopia of turning Somalia into an 'Ethiopian colony' while killing civilians.
