Somalia- Islamist warns against face-saving exit for Ethiopian troops

Sunday 10 August 2008, Mareeg Online

Sheikh Omar Iman Abubakar, one of the officials of the Asmara wing of
the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia, said by telephone during
a lecture in one of Mogadishu's mosques that there was a plan to reach
agreement with some of the leading Islamic leaders to weaken the power
of the resistance that is fighting inside the country.

He stated that it was important for all the combatants fighting
Ethiopian and government troops to be vigilant against such
machinations.

Abubakar further pointed out that the plan also aimed at creating a
face-saving exit for the dispirited Ethiopian troops who have suffered
serious setbacks.[Passage omitted].

Abukar's remarks could be seen meant on the peace agreement jointly
signed by Somali government the Alliance for the reliberation of Somalia
opposition group in Djibouti on 9th June.

The Djibouti agreement stipulated that a ceasefire should come into
effect throughout Somalia 30 days after its signing but the near daily
violence in the war-torn Horn of African nation continues unabated.

Under the agreement the Ethiopian troops in Somalia who crossed into the
country in late 2006 to help Somali government forces oust an Islamist
administration in south and central Somalia, would withdraw within 120
days after the deployment of a" sufficient number" of UN stabilization
forces.
