Dutch Emergency Aid for Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea
THE HAGUE, 01/08/08 - Development Cooperation Minister Bert Koenders is
allocating an extra 9.5 million euros for emergency aid to Somalia,
Ethiopia and Eritrea. With this, the total amount of emergency aid to
the three countries in 2008 comes to 27.5 million euros.
With the extra contribution, Koenders is responding to an appeal by John
Holmes, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian
Affairs. Earlier this month, "he rang the alarm bells once again
concerning the critical humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa",
Koenders stated yesterday.
Over 2.5 million people already require relief in Somalia. The
Netherlands will increase its contribution towards emergency aid for
that country from 9 to 12 million euros. This extra contribution will be
spent on measures such as improving the food situation, basic healthcare
and water supply.
The total Dutch contribution towards emergency aid to Ethiopia this year
is to be increased from 8 to 13 million euros. The extra 5 million will
go to the UN Humanitarian Response Fund. In addition, Koenders is
increasing his contribution towards UNICEF in Eritrea with 1 million
euros to 2.5 million euros.
