Eritreans in the Bay Area, California, are gearing up to host this year's Western USA Eritrean Festival for the second time in San Jose, CA. The festival coordinating committee is putting extra effort to make sure that this year's festival exceeds people's expectation.
The three day festivity, Aug 15 to Aug 17,2008 presents entertainment by professional Eritrean vocalists including Helen Meles, Habtom Debesai, Ogbai Mesfin and Mehret W/ Yohannes. Cultural shows by Eritrean Youth, vendor exhibits, food, sports, youth and children's programs and many more activities.
In the day time activities there will be sport that includes soccer, basketball, track & field. Educational seminar will also be given. Vendors selling traditional attire, CDs & DVDs, souvenir and other collectable items will be on hand. Bay area women are busy getting ready for food and drink. There will be an open tent area from which Abotat and Adetat Adi pride of our community, seat and enjoy drinking traditional coffee.
The youth activities committee is working hard to make sure that the youth enjoy
the festival by having them participate in all the planning and implementation stages. Among other things the youth activities include:
Indoor events:
Game room, with Eritrean-style JEOPARDY, How-To WORKSHOPS (hands-on demonstrations on how to prepare boon & himbasha, as well as the traditional 12 steps to cutting a dorho)
Outdoor events:
Water balloon toss, Tag-a-War, leg relays, egg relays, and little friendly volleyball competition.
