Somali opposition alliance leader accuses fired leaders of treason

Thursday 24 July 2008, Mareeg Online

Hussein Mohamed Farah Aideed, one of the members of the Asmara,
Eritrean-based Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia [ARS], said he
chaired the meeting in which Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad and Sharif Hasan
Sheikh Adan were fired as ARS chairman and central committee chairman,
respectively.

"The two sharifs committed treason against the country and were
subsequently removed. Sheikh Hasan Dahir Aweys was chosen as chairman of
the alliance and Sharif Salah Muhammad Ali was named chairman of the
central committee of the alliance," Aideed said.

Hussein Aideed stated that the ARS was created to help drive the enemy
[Ethiopian troops] out of Somalia, but the two sharifs deviated from
that goal.

The struggle continues and the Somali people are ready to expel the
enemy from Somalia.

"The two sharifs were involved in activities detrimental to the
struggles of the alliance and the Somali people," Hussein Aideed said,
adding that the ARS constitution stipulated that any person who violated
the charter would lose his post.

Hussein Aideed said the alliance would continue with its plan of
struggle and that from now henceforth the alliance was under a fully
approved new leadership.

Meanwhile, it appears that the ARS has split into two factions, with one
based in Djibouti and the other in Asmara.
