SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU)
condemned Monday Eritrea's military action against Djibouti in disputable
border areas and demanded that the former withdraw "immediately and
unconditionally."

In a statement released during the AU summit which opened in Egypt's Red
Sea resort Sharm El-Sheikh Monday, the AU urged Eritrea to "show restraint,
resort to dialogue to resolve any bilateral dispute and to give cooperation
to all efforts deployed to this effect."

On the sidelines of the AU summit, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi
met his Djibouti counterpart Dileita Mohamed.

In a press release after the meeting, Zenawi denied his country was
planning to begin mediation to settle the dispute between the two countries.

On June 12, Djibouti's Defense Ministry said the Eritrean military had
invaded the Ras Doumeira region in northern Djibouti, leaving 12 Djiboutian
soldiers dead and wounding 55 others.

Ties between the two countries have been strained since April 16 when
Eritrean troops were accused by Djibouti of raiding Ras Doumeira, a disputed
promontory on the shores of the Red Sea.
