All one can say is WOW! Amazing, incredible and just wonder how the
natural progression of a feeling that is deep in the bones of the Eritrean
people towards their beloved country is something that can’t be simulated
nor copied. While the celebrations at home were being held throughout the
month, as thousands of people flocked into the motherland, those who were
outside of Eritrea also expressed their happiness in many parts of the
world. From many different cities in the United States and Canada to South
Africa, Australia, the Middle east including Israel, and to Europe the
Eritrean people not only expressed their hard won independence over 20 years
ago but as the theme of this year’s celebration says, “Perfect Harmony..For
National Dignity”. Throughout the 20 years this nation of brave people has
endured so much obstacles but today Eritrea finds itself as a nation, which
has slowly transformed itself into a place that most others should learn
from. In Eritrea despite the many unfair sanctions, wars, infiltrations of
many kinds including from the many media outlets and human rights, religious
rights and other terrible attacks, the united stance of the people has
overcome all. United forever as a people since those whom we will be paying
respect to on June 20th were also united in their quest to allow us to
celebrate our 20th year, the strength of our unity must and will remain
intact as we march into the next phase of nation building while defending
the false accusation by the same world body that left us for dead in the
1950’s. Meanwhile, the rule of law must prevail and Eritrea’s sovereign
territories must be cleared of all enemies. It is no longer whom Badme and
its environments belong to but simply and kindly asking the aggressors of
the war to leave Eritrea’s premises as the rule of law has suggested.

Reflecting back on the past twenty years there are many things that we have
learned and must continue to learn as we develop into a nation that we had
envisioned Eritrea to be. It is not going to be easy and we may still face
more obstacles in the future but the hard part has passed and our goal
should be how to focus on defending the nation while building it. The answer
will always be this year’s theme as mentioned earlier. “Wuhud
Kinit..Nhagerawi Kibret.

To the Eritrean defense forces and to the leadership whose allegiance has
been to protect Eritrea through thick and thin you have outdone yourself and
you deserve to be proud. While watching a documentary on ERI-TV about he
vigilance of the Eritrean military I saw an interview that really hit home
with a member an EDF. He was talking about two of his martyred (Bitsot)
cadres as they were at the height of a battle. He went on to say that both
members had their differences and sometimes did not agree on many things and
did not see eye to eye but when the enemy tanks and the wave of enemy
soldiers started to attack they forgot everything and stood vigilant to
defend their country and in the process giving up their lives. This is just
one of many incredible events that were documented in our first 20 years
chapter. There are many heroic moments and events at home and throughout the
globe that have also helped preserve our unity and we must continue to do
more as our challenges will be sophisticated in nature with many enemies
trying to penetrate into our society. We also lost many Eritrean heroes
young and old in sectors of our society who have done so much and those
young lost children who made decisions to take a risk with their lives. The
plan was and is as most of us saw it right through the enemy’s eyes was to
dismantle that secret to our success, which is UNITY and STEDFASTNESS.

Outpouring messages to the leader of Eritrea and the people of Eritrea came
in numbers and from diverse countries and organizations. If we look deep
into what Eritrea has been doing to protect and develop regional peace,
there is no reason as to why these messages should not be coming. It is
commendable what this country in just 20 years has done. If any god fearing
and law abiding citizen of this world learns more about Eritrea they would
appreciate it as have these leaders of the world. Amazing when every country
even those that oppose each other all together come to a unanimous decision
in appreciating the hard work of the nation of Eritrea and it’s leadership.
Meanwhile on this memorial day weekend in our adopted home of the USA we are
somewhat disappointed by the President of the United States Barak Obama who
was elected for change. Neither he nor his administration sent messages of
congratulations to the people of Eritrea. Eritreans in America did vote for
him after all and the President of Eritrea even sent a note of
congratulations message when he took office. It’s high time that we as
Eritrean-Americans get mobilized to support those who are reasonable towards
regional peace in the horn even under difficult circumstances. Thanks to the
Mayor of Washington D.C a few congress people and the State of California
for wishing and declaring May 24th, 2011 Eritrea’s independence day. To
those handful few that chose this time to demonstrate against the 100 times
bigger amount of Eritrean people or should I say the vast majority of
Eritreans, it is your prerogative but there is no doubt that one day you
will look back and realize what you are doing is wrong.

Awet n’ hafash and Zelalemawi Zikri n’swatna.

Let’s look forward to June 20th as the time to appreciate those who gave up
their lives is just around
