On Saturday, April 2nd, the Denver chapter of the National Union of Eritrean
Women (NUEW), also known as Hamade, hosted a women’s seminar. Samrawit
Michael, NUEW Chairwoman for the North American region, successfully
addressed and engaged current and prospective members in a deep,
thought-provoking discussion. Representatives from PFDJ and YPFDJ also
attended in solidarity and as a sign of support of the Denver chapter’s
progress.
Denver, one of North America’s newest chapters, officially joined the global
network of women almost one year ago. Under the same banner of NUEW in
Eritrea – dedication to improving the status of Eritrean women – Denver
women discussed various issues currently effecting them back home and in the
diaspora. Discussion included various NUEW projects that are underway; the
importance of strong working relationships between PFDJ, YPFDJ, and NUEW;
and most importantly, the mission, goals and principals of NUEW.
NUEW was established in 1979 as one of the mass organizations of the
Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. It succeeded in organizing and
encouraging women’s participation in the war effort and set an exemplary
movement in motion. Today, in the diaspora and in the country NUEW continues
to be an exemplary women’s movement that enhances the role of women by
raising their political consciousness.
In the end, members of Hamade-Denver reaffirmed their commitment to the
NUEW’s mission of seeking to ensure that all Eritrean women confidently
stand for their rights and equally participate in the political, economic,
social, and cultural spheres of the country and share its benefits. The
women’s seminar closed with zikri sem’atat - a moment of silence for
Eritrea’s martyrs.
