If you haven't bought a new atlas in ages, be aware that there have been new countries added to the map since you last looked. Here are the world's youngest countries to add to your checklist of places to visit

1. Montenegro (2006)

After the death of Josip Tito, Yugoslavia descended into civil war and the country was divided along ethnic lines with many new states being created in the process. The latest of those nations, but probably not the last as the fate of Kosovo is still not determined, was Montenegro. Tourism remains a bright spot for this tiny, mountainous country on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.

4. Eritrea (1993)

After a long and bitter 30-year war, the province of Eritrea broke away from the African nation of Ethiopia to form its own independent state. Tensions remain between the two nations as well as neighbouring Djibouti. Despite the desparate poverty of many of the country's inhabitants, new development projects offer hope for a better future.
