A beautiful Eritrean night honoring our women in New York City

The traditional anniversary of the womens day organized by the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW Hamadie) was colorfully celebrated with patriotic zeal in the beautifully decorated hall on the premises which was purchased by a group of Eritrean investors in the Bronx on March 19, 2011!

The festivity, which was well attended by Eritreans of the Tri-state area began with encouraging and supportive speeches highlighting the strength and resilience of Eritrean women given by Araya Desta, the Eritrean Ambassador to the United Nation, and followed by Tsehaynesh, the President of the NUEW, New York Branch.

The crowd was entertained and captivated by the musical performance of Teklit Lilay of Washington D.C. a master of the wata and krar who superbly knew how to keep the joyful and delighted guests continuously on the dance floor.

The highlight of the night with out a doubt, however, was the cultural performance by the Hidri group, an Eritrean conscious high school aged group of fascinating young Eritrean-Americans of the Tri-state area performing a brief traditional show with various cultural dances. They obviously were the darlings of the night causing the mothers and fathers to shower them with money bills and have the mothers incessantly erupt in ululation.

Lastly, the gourmets of good Eritrean food were sure to find and be served the very best of what the Eritrean kitchen has to offer.

It was a successful and joyful celebration and commemoration of all Eritrean women indeed.
