'Made in Africa' a Hit in Dubai

28 February 2011

More than 30 Namibian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) showcased their products, especially arts and crafts, at Dubai's Global Village this weekend.

Namibia's Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Hage Geingob, toured Global Village on Friday night, where people from more than 160 nations are exhibiting their products. The Ministry of Trade and Industry sponsored return tickets and accommodation for the country's SMEs to participate in Dubai's biggest and longest exhibition.

In an interview with Nampa on Friday, the Executive Director of the African Pavilion, Jalal Balala, said there are 30 pavilions at the Global Village located in the east of Dubai.

He said the annual expo is being run for three years now and each year, it attracts more than 400 million visitors.

"People are exhibiting all sorts of products, except those prohibited worldwide such as drugs," he explained.

From Africa, most of the products being showcased are handicrafts, he said.

"Africans are making good money at the expo. Container-loads of products are offloaded at the Global Village every day, especially from Kenya," Balala noted.

"We are making money. The African products are unique at the Global Village, and they are being sold out at a fast pace," he continued.

The Global Village's expo links Africa to the rest of the world, and connects the continent to a market of more than two billion people around Dubai.

India has more than 200 exhibitors here, while, China sent about 150 traders to the Global Village, Balala said.

African countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Senegal, Namibia, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Sudan, Ethiopia, South Africa and Eritrea brought a wide range of indigenous handicrafts.

The expo ran for 111 days. It commenced in November 2010, and ended this weekend. - Nampa
