Eritrea to host International Youth Forum in July

Sunday 30 May 2010

?

May 29, 2010 (ADDIS ABABA) - Youth activists and representatives from across the globe will be gathering in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, late in July to discuss on a number of international youth concerns and on ways of creating partnership among themselves. The National Union of Eritrean Youth & Students (NUEYS) said on Saturday.

In a press release it emailed to Sudan Tribune, the NUEYS said that it has recognized the 2010 as the beginning of the International Year of the Youth.

"Following the Eritrean Youth Festival, the NUEYS will be conducting an international youth forum with the goal of bringing together international representatives of youth and student organizations to discuss creating partnership through the themes of inclusive dialogue and exchange for mutual understanding, peace building, sustainable development, active citizenship and public interest diplomacy" NUEYS said

The international forum will be held on July 21 - 23, 2010 under the theme of "Mutual Understanding for Peace, Security and Sustainable Development".

The forum will discuss the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), HIV/AIDS, Education, Promoting dialogue for mutual understanding and tolerance, peace building for sustainable development, youth partnership for youth development and empowerment, the prevailing situation in the Horn of Africa, youth political participation, active youth citizenship for development and social justice, public interest diplomacy, youth and media, and techniques for advocacy and lobbying for peace and sustainable development.

This international youth forum is a continuation of a Regional Youth Forum conducted in July 2008. The regional youth forum saw the establishment of the Horn of Africa Youth Initiative (HAYI) Network.

The National Union of Eritrean Youth & Students (NUEYS) has a mission of cultivating and producing capable youth by promoting and strengthening Eritrean youth in all aspects of national, regional, and international development processes.

Currently the union has 7 regional branches and over 50 sub-branches in Eritrea. It also extends to Eritreans in the Diaspora with over 20 international chapters, in over 15 countries around the world.

The National Union of Eritrean Youth and Student (NUEYS) as a representative and agent of youth, says it has been playing an enormous part in this huge task and has been doing a great effort in various ways. But it strongly believes that the need to learn from other's experience and work in partnership with different regional and international organizations.

"There is no doubt that the NUEYS has been and can play a crucial role in coordinating the hard work made toward the youth nationally," says Daniel Semere in his comments at the union's web, he however adds "it is only the engagement with the rest of the world that will ultimately have a decisive contribution in its task of building a healthy youth."

Accordingly, youth organizations, governments, and international organizations should seek to work with a broad range of the youth population, both those organized through formal youth organizations and those who are not. Cooperation and exchanges should be used to develop the capacity of young people by facilitating the interchange of information among them.
