On May 22nd, 2010 Eritreans in Metro Atlanta and its environ celebrated the 19th Eritrean Independence Day with great joy and patriotic zeal. The event was a tremendous success as shown by the capacity filled event hall that was filled with joyous Eritreans celebrating their Independence. The celebration was opened with a brief speech from the chairman of Eritrean Holiday Organizing Committee, Mr. Yonas Seyum, followed by a video message from the Eritrean Ambassador to the United States, H.E Mr. Ghirmai Ghebremariam.
With a live performance from legendary singer Wedi Zager the crowd celebrated the night away. The event was made even more successful by the full participation of members of the NUEW, PFDJ, YPFDJ, HIDRI, and youth from the local soccer teams. Highlighting the bond that Eritreans share and symbol of this remarkable holiday, guests remarked their steadfast support for the Eritrean people and government.
Along with the celebration there was also ample discussion concerning the passage of the unjust, illegal and unfair sanction that was placed on Eritrea. Guests were promptly briefed on the on going effort to repeal the illegal sanction and informed on various actions that can be taken by individuals to help with the E-SMART Campaign. Throughout the event youth from the local YPFDJ chapter roamed the room acquiring signatures from guest to add to the thousands that have already been collected from across the country.
