Somalia: AMISOM troops join fighting as rebels advance

MOGADISHU, May 23, 2010 (Mareeg)-The troops of the African Union Mission in
Somalia (AMISOM) has joined fighting between government soldiers and
Islamist rebels in Mogadishu after the rebels advanced towards the
presidential palace, witnesses said on Saturday.
The al Qaeda linked rebels captured bases of government soldiers in north
Mogadishu on Friday and continued their fighting against the government
soldiers to gain more territories on Saturday.
Residents say AMISOM tanks joined the fighting on Saturday afternoon and
bushed back the Islamist rebels.
At least 10 civilians, most of them children have been killed in the
fighting on Saturday night. 70 civilians who were also injured in
yesterday's fighting were admitted in Mogadishu main hospitals on Saturday.
More civilians started to flee from their homes in north Mogadishu and
reached in Lower Shabelle region.
The daily fighting in restive Mogadishu forced the civilians to flee also
daily from their residential areas.
