Washington D.C, On Saturday May 15th, 2010 at the ECCC (Eritrean Civic &
Cultural Center) the annual mother's day appreciation took place as part of
YPFDJ's yearly event. The event which started at about 3:00 PM in the
afternoon was well organized and had a good attendance considering that most
Eritreans in the Washington D.C metro area were pre-occupied with a couple
of graduations, weddings, a timket and a funeral on the same day. While
every day is mother's day for most of us, this annual celebration to
commemorate and appreciate Eritrean mom's has been an ongoing event for the
past few years. On a beautiful spring afternoon, the aroma of the traditional
Eritrean coffee and our beautiful mothers sitting in a round table
discussing issues related to Eritrea and more was a great sight to see. With
hambasha's, pop corns and other sweets making their round, it sure was a
pleasure to see a mix of the young and the older generation interacting and
enjoying the day.
After a great afternoon, Aster Bocrai of the National Union of Eritrean
Women, spoke of how this event is a great event that shows that "the
Eritrean mother" is always an important part of the family and the
community. In attendance were many women including the veteran DC area
dedicated mother, sister, Bitsati Genet Gebru. YPFDJ members made their
comments in appreciation of our mothers. Their visionary outlook on life and
their backing of the Eritrean struggle for self reliance as well as their
commitment to the continued development of the Eritrean people will always
be in our minds. YPFDJ members expressed their unwavering salute to the
mothers and Eritrean women in general.
A special cake was cut for the celebrations bearing the Eritrean flag
and to end the day, each participant was given a framed picture that
symbolizes the defiance of the Eritrean woman, the famous black and white
picture of an Eritrean TEGADLIT with wishes of a blessed mother's day from
the YPFDJ DC chapters 1 & 2.
