Karti Discusses Bilateral Relations with Eritrean Foreign Minister

Khartoum, 11 May (SUNA) - The State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali Ahmed Karti, Tuesday discussed with the Eritrean delegation, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Osman Salih, progress of the distinguished relations between Sudan and Eritrea and means of boosting the cooperation between the two countries in all the domains

Meanwhile, Karti said in a statement to SUNA following his meeting with the Eritrean delegation that the talks touched on the government arrangements for referendum in south Sudan

The minister said that he acquainted the Eritrean delegation on the government stance toward the referendum, reiterating the state's full commitment to respect the choice and will of the southerners who will choose either unity or cessation

Karti expressed his hope that the referendum will be held in an atmosphere of fairness and transpency

He indicated that the meeting touched on the talks of the Eritrean delegation in Juba with the leadership of Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in order to get acquainted with SPLM views regarding the arrangements for holding the referendum and carrying out the demarcation of borders between the north and south Sudan

The minister said that the Eritrean delegation met with the Assistant to the President and Deputy Chairman of the National Congress Party for Political and Organizational Affairs, Dr. Nafie Ali Nafie, in view that the visit of the Eritrean delegation aims also to congratulating the National Congress on its winning in the elections

On Sudan's mediation initiative between Eritrea and Djibouti, the minister said that the initiative is accepted by the two countries, explaining that its procedures will begin after the oath-taking and the formation of the new government. He saidthat he felt readiness of the Eritrean delegation to negotiate with Djibouti in order to solve the differences between the two countries
