YPFDJ I and II of Washington DC held a full day workshop on Saturday April
24, 2010 at Howard University.
In the workshop that lasted from 9:00am to 6:00pm, Btsai Dawit Haile, Head
of Organizational and Youth Affairs at the office of Public and Community
Affairs, discussed the organizational structure, policies and procedures of
YPFDJ. He also noted, while the movement's primary focus so far has been
mobilizing and organizing the youth, it has now reached a stage where the
objectives of the movement are coming to fruition. An example of this is the
role the youth played in the February 22nd demonstrations and local Hizbawi
Meketes following the unjust sanctions imposed on Eritrea.
Btsai Berhane Solomon, Head of Public and Community Affairs, presented on
‘Elements of a Successful Organization’. He also discussed Eritrea’s
challenges and priorities. YPFDJ DC was fortunate enough to be blessed with
the presence of Ambassador Ghirmai Gebremariam to share his personal
experience and account of the struggle for Eritrea's Independence. He
highlighted the role the youth movements in Europe and North America played
in mobilizing the Eritrean Diaspora and organizing its support to the
Eritrean cause. The Ambassador also answered questions on Eritrea's current
affairs from participants of the workshop.
Members of YPFDJ DC chapters also performed an evaluation of the chapters’
activities using SWOT analysis. They were able to identify internal and
external challenges along with their strengths and weaknesses. The findings
will be used in planning upcoming programs and events.
