A Busy Action Day in the Bay Area…
Opposing the Unjust Sanctions Imposed on Eritrea!

Following up to the worldwide demonstrations held on February 22, 2010, a
National Day of Action was hosted and held by YPFDJ chapters across the
United States. On March 23, 2010, the YPFDJ-Oakland chapter in conjunction
with the YPFDJ-Santa Rosa chapter gathered at the Eritrean Civic & Cultural
Center in Oakland, CA and assisted over a hundred people in writing letters,
writing emails and making phone calls to not only to President Obama, the
President that promised change during his campaign, but also to various
United Nation (UN) Ambassadors, US Senators and US Representatives.
Americans came from all over the Bay Area, by foot, car, BART, bus, and
bike, in order to guarantee that their voices would be heard. In addition,
several people who could not make it to the community center sent out
emails, faxes, postcards, letters and made phone calls from their respective
locations. The diverse group of attendees, ranging from young kids to
grandparents, ensured that they participated in an event that communicated,
to our officials, that Eritreans are tired of being bullied based on
unsupported accusations and that we as Americans need to recognize that
Eritrea wants peace.

Despite several attempts to discourage the participants from expressing
their opinions, over a thousand emails were sent, hundreds of calls were
made, and hundreds of faxes, letters and postcards written by both Eritreans
and non-Eritreans were sent. The goal of the event was to show, that
Eritreans and non-Eritreans all over the Bay Area and across the nation are
opposed to the unfair and unjust sanctions imposed by the UN. Overall, the
chapter members were excited to receive such positive feedback from the
community members and other attendees in regards to the event. Attendees
were happy to see not only see that the event was run by youth but also that
the youth are concerned with the future of their country of origin, Eritrea.

The YPFDJ-Oakland and Santa Rosa chapter members would like to thank
everyone who participated in the Day of Action for not only their support
but for standing up for a just cause.
