To All Youth,

As the world wide demonstration is approaching us on Monday, The Washington
D.C metro area being one of the venues will host a youth Mekhete as part of
the weekend gathering. There is no need to explain that Eritrea was
sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council on December 23, 2009
ILLEGALLY & UNJUSTLY. These sanctions will negatively affect the general
population and limit self-defense against occupation.

What is a sanction?
Why is Eritrea being sanctioned?
Is the sanction just or legal?
What impacts could the sanction have?
What can be done?

Join us for the Youth Mekhete on February 20, 2010 3pm - 6pm at the ECCC
(600 L St NW). Panelists and guest speaker, Sophia Tesfamariam, will inform
the public youth about the sanction and answer your questions.

Mekhete translated into English is not an easy task. The closest
translations of mekhete are: an ongoing resistance to challenges, defiance
to giving up, or creating endurance to beat all impasses and obstacles.
Mekhete is not a time-one event but it is the combination of all strategies
and tactics organized by the people to combat a challenge. The idea of
mekhete was established during the struggle for Eritrean Independence and
has taken place for years after. Mekhete, just like the E-SMART campaign
incorporates educating, organizing and mobilizing.

Youth have always played a significant role in Eritrea’s resistance
struggles; whether it was the independence struggle, the 1998-2000 border
war, nation building efforts, standing against being placed on the terrorist
list or today’s sanctions, Eritrean youth have actively defended the
country, the people and the values of social justice, self-determination,
and self-reliance.

Youth mekhete, simply, is the mobilizing and organizing of youth who stand
on the shoulders of all those who came before us and to stand side by side
with all of our brothers and sisters today to protect our values, our
sovereignty, and to defend our nation once again, against anything that
could harm us.
