Skulls and stone tools dating back to many years discovered in Gelalo
sub-zone

Gelalo, 16 March 2009 - In line with the excavation task being undertaken in
a number of villages of Gelalo sub-zone, including Buya, Maebele, Diyuli,
Abder and Bada through Eritrean and foreign experts, skulls and stone tools
dating back to many years have been discovered, according to Dr. Yosief
Libsekal, head of the Eritrean National Museum.
In the excavation and study so far undertaken, over a million old female
skull has been unearthed in Buya, while marine resource remnants and stone
tools dating back to more than 125,000 years have been discovered in Abdur.
Besides, human skulls and other skeletons have been found in Demalu area in
Bada.
Dr. Yosief further pointed out that relics that reflect one's identity have
also a major role to play in promoting domestic tourism, and that the Museum
is striving to preserve such heritages and enhance excavation tasks. He also
stressed the need to inform the Eritrean National Museum before putting in
place infrastructure facilities like roads and building complexes so as to
examine the site in case it is endowed with ancient artifacts or not.
Prof. Erasto Abatye, an archeologist who is taking part in the excavation
activities, said on his part that the local inhabitants and members of the
National Museum itself took active participation in the undertaking. As the
ancient relics found in the area have regional and international
significance, they should be renovated and preserved, he added.
