A 51-year-old Lockport soldier assigned to an National Guard airlift unit
based in Hammond died at a military installation in the African nation of
Djibouti, the Department of Defense announced today,

The death, military officials said, was not combat related but is under
investigation.

Details of the Friday death of CW4 Milton Eric Suggs at Camp Lemonier were
not available, beyond the initial announcement.

Camp Lemonier is a Navy base that is, according to military reference
sources, a primary installation supplying aid and supplies for U.S. forces
in Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 38th Operational Support Airlift Detachment, in
Hammond.

Officials did say that he was in Africa working "in support of Operation
Enduring Freedom."

That is the name used by officials to describe military operations connected
to the war in Afghanistan.

Djibouti is located in eastern Africa with a coast on the Gulf of Aden. It
is south of Ethopia and north of Eritrea. Somalia is located to the
southeast.

The closest middle eastern nation to Djibouti is Yemen, across the Gulf of
Aden.
