Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, the chairman of the Asmara-based Alliance
for the Re-liberation of Somalia [ARS] has said the election of
Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Hasan as the president of Somalia is
inconsequential.

Aweys said electing Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Hasan as the president of
Somalia is inconsequential to both him and his alliance. He said
Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad's victory has nothing to do with him and
his alliance. Sheikh Hasan Dahir Aweys, speaking to [pan-Arab TV] Al-
Jazeera said the conflict between him and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad
is not about his election but is based on principle.

Sheikh Aweys accused Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad of diverting from the
principles of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia. He said
all that his Alliance is interested in are the interests of the
Somali people.

The chairman of the Asmara-based ARS said Sheikh Sharif's intention
to become the president of Somalia is one that is unrealistic and
will not last. Sheikh Hasan Dahir Aweys has repeatedly accused Sheikh
Sharif of having diverted from the principles of the ARS.

The statement by Sheikh Hasan Dahir Aweys comes at time when the
chairman of the Djibouti-based ARS was last night elected to become
the new president of Somalia after winning parliamentary elections.
