Miss East Africa 2008, Burundian Claudia Niyonzima, yesterday received a
brand new car, worth 35 US dollar (about 35m/-), from the event organizers,
Rena Events Limited. The Burundi Ambassador to Tanzania, Amuri Leanare,
presented the prizes to event winners during a brief handing over ceremony
held in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Leanare said the event plays a major role at enhancing cross-cultural
co-operation among the people of East Africa. He urged parents in Tanzania
to allow their daughters to compete in the beauty pageants because he said,
such events provide opportunities which will benefit them.

The first runner up, Tanzanian Annet John was awarded 5,000 US dollar (about
5m/-), while the third winner, Rahwa Ghebrehimet from Eritrea was given
3,000 us dollar (about 3m/-). Joyful Niyonzima said shortly after receiving
her prize that she will use the title to help orphans whose parents died of
HIV/AIDS. She also said that she will work round the clock to support
community development activities in the region.

The contest which was held in Burundi on December 19, last year, involved 28
beauties from Tanzania, the host Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia,
Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Re Union, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius and
Comoros. Chairman of the EA Beauty Pageant Organizing Committee, Rena
Callist, promised an electrifying and competitive event next year. He said
"We are set to increase the package for winners."
