Asmara, Eritrea, June 24, 2009- Following the invitation of the
Government of Eritrea, a high level delegation from United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) regional office for Africa is conducting
three days visit to Eritrea.
 
The purpose of the visit is to strengthen the existing cooperation and
to discuss with the government further areas of support.
 
The UNEP mission to Eritrea is led by Mr. Mounkaila Goumandakoye,
Director and Representative UNEP's regional office for Africa
accompanied by Mr. Chris Ambala and Mr Jeremy Bazye, UNEP's early
warning assessment division and Regional network coordinator
respectively.
 
During its three days stay in Eritrea, the delegation will discuss the
possible cooperation between UNEP and major stakeholders in the country
and identified the potential areas of cooperation in land degradation
assessment, water and sanitation, climate change and environmental
health.
 
In its meeting with the UN Country Team that was held this morning, the
Acting UN/Humanitarian Coordinator and WHO's Representative Dr. Idrissa
Sow, briefed the mission that to encourage the non-resident agencies
(NRAs) activities in the country, the UNCT Eritrea included NRAs
programmes in its annual work plan for the year as one of the key
results. Participating agencies from the UNCT explained the visiting
mission their respective programmes and the UNCT's activities vis-à-vis
the UN development assistance frame work in Eritrea
 
The possible engagement of UNEP in Eritrea will bolster the UNCT's
active engagement and will help the UNCT to come up with a joint
strategy for support to the Government counterparts on environmental
issues.
