Meles urges UNSC to salvage TFG from possible collapse

A/A, May 16, 2009 (Addis Ababa) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi urges the
UN Security Council to urgently provide support to salvaging from demise
the legitimate Transitional Federal Government in Somalia. The council,
Meles requests, should also implement its decisions on Eritrea.

The prime minister on Saturday received a UNSC delegation, with whom he
discussed issues of peace and security in Africa.

Describing to the delegation the magnitude of the problem in Somalia,
Prime Minister Meles stressed the imperative for the UNSC provide
support to salvage the TFG from collapse.

TFG's foes have had multiple accesses to finance and arms, Meles
disclosed, and pressed the UNSC to take clear-cut and urgent measure to
prevent what could have been ruinous to the legitimate government in
Somalia.

The UNSC should also take a proper look at the situation in Sudan by
making use of its direct role for peaceful resolution, Meles noted.

Prime Minister Meles also urged the UNSC on the need to implement its
resolutions on Eritrea.

Meles responded to queries posed by the members of the UNSC delegation
as to Eritrea's actions in the region, according to a senior government
official who attended the meeting.

Eritrea defies UNSC's ultimatum by not withdrawing its troops from the
forcefully occupied areas in Djibouti, and UNSC keeps silent, Meles
said, and warned of undesirable consequences if the council would not
enforce its resolutions.

The UNSC delegation are here attending the 3rd joint consultative
meeting of the UNSC and the African Union Peace and Security Council
(UNPSC).

The two council's during their morning session at the Africa Hall
exchanged views on pressing issues in Somalia and the Sudan, and looked
into ways of providing financial support to the TFG, among other points
of discussion.

Particularly, the two councils expressed concern over the moves of
al-Shabaab to dismantle the internationally recognized TFG at gun point.

They noted that al-Shabaab is receiving significant backing from the
government in Asmara, that those who are fighting the TFG in Mogadishu
are insergents and that these trends menace peace in the region.

The two sides consulted also on south and north Sudan, Darfur as well as
simmering tensions between Sudan and Chad.
