'Export diversification gets priority'

Tuesday, May 05,2009

DHAKA: Industries Minister Dilip Barua Monday said the government is
giving priority to diversification of exports side by side with creating
internal market for the products to protect local mills and factories
from the global recession, reports BSS. He was exchanging views with
leaders of Bangladesh Ceramic Ware Manufacturers Association (BCWMA) at
the Industries Ministry here.

Industries Secretary Dewan Zakir Hossain, BCWMA President Rashed Moudud
Khan, General Secretary Lutfor Rahman and FBCCI Adviser Manzur Ahmed
were present on the occasion, among others.

Mentioning that the ceramic industry is playing an important role in
creating employment and value addition, the BCWMA leaders demanded
inclusion of ceramic ware in the new industrial policy as a priority
sector.

To protect the interest of local ceramic industry, they also demanded of
the government to change the existing duty structure, fix interest rate
of bank loans at single digit and cancel the PSI system.

As a labour-intensive and value-adding local industry, the industries
minister said, the government will provide all possible assistance in
protecting the interest of the ceramic industry.

"Fixing interest rate of bank loans at single digit for
industrialization in the country is the demand of the time," he
commented.

Dilip Barua stressed the need for increasing duty on finished products
by reducing duty on raw materials for well- protection of the local
industry.

the agricultural department," Matia said.
