Russia warns US over Europe missile plan

Russia again voices readiness to deploy short-range Iskander missiles
near Poland in response to the US missile shield plans in Eastern
Europe.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Tuesday reiterated the
Kremlin's position that the missiles would only be places in country's
Kaliningrad exclave if Washington continues plans to establish a defense
missile radar and 10 interpreter missiles in the Czech Republic and
Poland (respectively).
"The U.S. has not revised its plans... If there is no missile shield,
there won't be any Iskander's," Ryabkov was quoted by official Interfax
news agency as saying.
"We are not seeking to put them there. We really do not want to do
that," stressed Ryabkov.
"Russia is very concerned about unilateral efforts to develop missile
shields that decidedly pose complications in the mutual balance of
weapons," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Monday, duing a speech
speaking at the University of Helsinki in the Finnish capital.
The announcement seems to undermine recent optimism expressed by both
sides that embittered diplomatic relations were improving, with
President Obama's administration adopting the "reset button" phrase.
