UN Renews Somalia-Eritrea Arms Embargo

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS UNITED NATIONS — Nov 10, 2016, 2:57 PM ET

The U.N. Security Council has renewed an arms embargo on Somalia and Eritrea citing a continuing threat from al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants.

The 15-member council on Thursday approved the renewal of sanctions with 10 nations voting in favor and five abstaining.

"The sanctions are preventing al-Shabab from having the incoming weapons that they otherwise would," Matthew Rycroft, the U.N. ambassador from the United Kingdom, which drafted the resolution, said before the vote.

China, a veto-holding council member, abstained.

China's deputy U.N. ambassador said the sanctions were not conducive to strengthening cooperation between the countries in the region and said it hoped the council will take into account the changes on the ground and adjust the embargo accordingly.

UN Security Council maintains sanctions against Eritrea despite abstentions

USA UNITED NATIONS | 10.11.2016 - 20:54

The Security Council on Thursday renewed UN sanctions imposed since 2009 to Eritrea for its involvement in the conflict in Somalia, even though there were five abstentions among the 15 member countries.

China had pressed the Council to set a timetable for lifting those sanctions, including an arms embargo.

But the resolution, proposed by the British and adopted ambassador on Thursday with 10 votes and five abstentions, limited to promise that it will "review these measures" after the group of experts to monitor sanctions render its next report, scheduled for before the end of next April.

China, Russia, Egypt, Angola and Venezuela abstained. These countries felt that for the third consecutive year, the UN experts had found no evidence that Eritrea supported the Islamists Shebab rebels in Somalia.

"It is unacceptable that sanctions be prolonged indefinitely and we must apply them flexibly," said Ambassador Egito, Amr Abdellatif Aboulatta.

British Ambassador Matthew Ryxroft, who introduced the resolution, denounced the "lack of cooperation" by Eritrea.

For its part, the charge d'affaires of Eritrea, Amanuel Giorgio, urged the Security Council to "lift without delay the unjust and counter-productive sanctions"
