ASMARINA | LONDON PREMIERE

Wed 2 Nov | 18:30 | Ritzy Brixton

Thur 3 Nov | 19:00 | Bernie Grant Arts Centre

Dir. Alan Maglio, Medhin Paolos

Italy. 2015. 69 mins. Italian with English subtitles. N/C 15+

The Eritrean and Ethiopian communities have been present in Italy for at least half a century and have been actively integrated into social and cultural life. Collecting memories from the habesha community in Milan, Asmarina documents the legacy of personal stories, exploring the different shades of identity, migration, and the aspirations of the people. The result is a collective tale which brings to light a postcolonial heritage that has been little scrutinised until now: the everyday stories of those born in Italy, those who have lived there for years, and the refugees who have just arrived.

Both screenings will be followed by a Q&A with director Medhin Paolos. The screening at Bernie Grant Arts Centre is a dine & view event; Eritrean food is included in the ticket.

Alan Maglio is a photographer and director who has represented his works in different exhibitions and festivals in Italy and abroad. His style is a mix between portraiture, street photography and documentary and often tackles different topics related to cultural identities. He lives and works in Milan. Asmarina is his second film, following Milano Centrale – Stories from the Train Station.

Medhin Paolos is a photographer, director, electronic musician and an activist for citizenship rights. Her career path has taken her from an international experience with Fiamma Fumana to her current work within ‘Rete G2’, the national organisation for citizenship rights. Asmarina is her debut film as a director.
