ShowMax expands to 36 African countries

Naspers’ Netflix competitor has expanded to 36 more countries.

By Staff Writer - May 13, 2016

ShowMax has launched its subscription video-on-demand service in 36
African countries.

This confirms initial reports that Naspers launched in South Africa
with the aim of expanding to developing economies.

Sources said ShowMax’s original plan was to beat Netflix to market in
these regions, but Netflix announced its global launchin 130 countries
on 6 January – much sooner than its original indications of “the end
of 2016”.

ShowMax will cost $7.99 per month in the new launch countries,
undercutting the price of the comparable 2-stream Netflix plan by $2.

Forbes reported that ShowMax chief product officer Barron Ernst said
its catalogue includes around 15,000 TV show episodes and movies.

Ernst said there will be an emphasis on localisation in the regions it
has launched, to differentiate itself from competitors.

The countries ShowMax will launch in are: Botswana, Burundi, Cabo
Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo,
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea,
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya,
Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Reunion,
Rwanda, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Sao Tome and
Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia,
and Zimbabwe.

ShowMax also offers KykNET International in 28 other countries,
bringing the number of countries it offers services in to 65
(including South Africa).
