Society, 05 Aug 2016 / By STA

Slovenia has welcomed a second group of migrants from Italy under an EU relocation scheme with nine Eritreans arriving on Thursday afternoon, according to the Interior Ministry.

The group are in need of international protection and were accommodated in the Ljubljana asylum centre. The ministry expects to start accepting their asylum requests on Friday.

A total of 34 asylum seekers have so far been transferred to Slovenia from Italy and Greece under the EU relocation scheme; six Eritreans arrived from Italy and 28 nationals of Syria and Iraq came from Greece in May.

The next group of 32 Syrian and Iraqi refugees is due from Greece in mid-August.

Slovenia has committed to take in a total of 567 refugees from Italy and Greece this and next year.

On Thursday, the government decided for Slovenia to take in 40 Syrian refugees from Turkey who will be able to get refugee status. The resettlement is under the March EU-Turkey deal designed to stop the migration wave.
