South Sudan president sacks 6 opposition ministers

Xinhua, August 3, 2016

South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Tuesday evening sacked six Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in Opposition (SPLM-IO) ministers and two deputies.

The affected ministers, who were sacked in a televised presidential decree on the national broadcaster, included Interior Minister Alfred Lado Gore, who was replaced by Michael Tiangjiek Mut.

Gore, the second in command in opposition faction, was however retained and named the Minister of Land, Housing, and Urban Development, replacing Mary Alfonse Nadio Lodira.

Kiir replaced Dak Doth Bishok, the minister of petroleum with Ezekiel Lul Gat. The former minister of higher education Peter Adwok Nyaba was replaced with Yien Tut.

Mabior Garang De Mabior, the former minister of water resources and irrigation was replaced with Sofia A. Gai. Peter Marcello, the minister of labour was replaced with Gabriel Duop Lam.

The president also replaced Diop Lam who was the deputy minister with Rieu Gatliek Gai and named Natake Allan as deputy minister for labour to replace Elizabeth Achuei.

Kiir said the reshuffle was carried out based on recommendation from the newly appointed First Vice-President Taban Deng Gai who took over from ex-rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar.

The reshuffle comes after Lam Akol resigned as Minister of Agriculture, calling for regime change, saying the peace deal which was aimed at ending more than two years of fighting is "dead'.

All the ministers who were sacked on Tuesday are loyal to Machar who fled Juba on July 9 following heavy clashes which erupted between forces loyal to him and President Kiir.

According to UNHCR, the deadly clashes between the two rival factions have sent thousands of civilians fleeing city including 60,000 others who have fled to neighbouring countries.

Meanwhile, President Kiir has reiterated his rejection of the regional force being mooted by the international community to help stabilize South Sudan.

Information Minister Michael Makuei accused the African Union (AU), the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) and UN for creating political turmoil in a bid to colonize South Sudan.

Makuei told journalists on Tuesday evening in Juba that the two bodies are out to prove that the transitional government that was put in place in April is not working so that they can prolong their stay in the country.

"We do not understand what the bodies mean by intervention when we are fully a sovereign state," he said, adding that the call for intervention is simply a new way of colonizing the country and tear it apart.

IGAD, AU and the UN have called for the deployment of third force to guard key government institution and act as the buffer zoon between the two rival armies in July.

The regional countries are due to hold a summit in Ethiopia this weekend to finalize plans to send troops from East African countries to Juba.

But Makuei said the action is not acceptable since it is not within the mandate of the organizations.

"This move is tantamount to the colonizers coming back in form of organization and claim to work for humanity with hidden agenda," he added, accusing the former political detainees for accepting to be used to cause chaos in the country.
