  • (Ecofin Agency) - The mining company Danakali signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with potential buyers to sell 200 000 tonnes / year of magnesium potassium sulphate (SOP-M) from its Colluli mine in Eritrea . SOP-M is currently trading in the market at $ 450 per ton.

Paul Donaldson, Managing Director and CEO of the company, expressed his satisfaction with the high level of interest in the project generated from the resources fertilizers Colluli series. "The signed MoU and the negotiations [ ...] point out that this type of fertilizer is strong global demand. This is particularly relevant in that the focus continues to be on improving the efficiency of fertilizer and water. "Said Mr. Donaldson.

Mr. Donaldson has further explained that the interest and the high price of SOP-million compared to potassium chloride, are due to the fact that it contains no chloride, but three key macronutrients (potassium, magnesium and sulfur) and is very soluble. It is appropriate, therefore, to magnesium deficient soils typically found in India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. "It is very simple to produce for the company, using the processing model set Colluli developed for the feasibility study, " the official added.

The Colluli project covers approximately 500 km2 in the low pressure region of Danakil in Southeast Eritrea. It is 100% owned by the company Colluli Mining Share Company (CMSC), a joint venture formed in equal shares by Danakali and Eritrean National Mining Corporation (ENAMCO), a public mining company Eritrea.
