since entering the country.
Child welfare officials say the children were vulnerable after the trauma
of their flight and many may have fallen prey to criminals and abusers.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Criminal Police (BKA) said that on January 1,
exactly 4,749 unaccompanied child and adolescent refugees are considered to
be missing.
Of them, 431 were younger than 13, while 4,287 were aged between 14 and 17
and 31 of them were aged 18.
On July 1 last year, the number of missing unaccompanied refugees stood at
1,637.
The BKA said that often the missing children 'reappeared' after a short
time, or there were multiple registrations by them in different parts of
the country.

But a spokesman could not rule out that criminals had played a part in some

months at least 10,000 unaccompanied refugee children had disappeared after
their arrival in Europe.
"This does not mean that something happened to all," a spokesman said.
"Some of the children could actually now be with relatives. But it means
that these children are at least potentially at risk" - for example, from
sexual abuse, slavery and even organ trafficking.
The President of the Child Welfare Association in Germany said children
were "easy victims" for criminals.
Many fear defenceless children have been sold into slavery by the smugglers
who got them to Europe.

The public must assume that the missing children are not "hidden in the
forest somewhere", but live "within sight". according to the BKA - meaning
the public should be vigilant to discover potentially exploited children.
Several MEPs have called in the European Parliament for information on the
more than 10,000 missing unaccompanied refugee children.
Among other things, the parliamentarians want to know how many
unaccompanied minors have been registered as refugees.
