15 migrants from Italy arrive in Malta as part of EU’s relocation programme

Tuesday, 23 February 2016, 15:33

This morning, the first group of migrants arrived in Malta as part of the EU's relocation programme from Italy and Greece, agreed last year on EU level.

This group of 15 asylum seekers from Eritrea arrived from Italy following the completion of relevant procedures. They were greeted by representatives from the government and non-Governmental organisations.

The asylum seekers will be hosted at the Initial Reception Centre in Marsa for approximately 7 days. During this period the asylum seekers will undergo medical screening, be registered in the EURODAC system and apply for international protection.

The asylum seekers in question will subsequently be hosted in Open Centre Accommodation by the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS)

On 1 March, Malta will be welcoming another 6 migrants from Greece.

These initiatives show that Malta truly practices solidarity at all times, and not only when it finds itself in need.

More asylum seekers will be hosted by Malta in terms of the EU resettlement programme, which will total 189 in two years.
