Burundi, South Sudan and terrorism were high on the agenda at the recent PSC Heads of State and Government meeting. Alongside these pressing issues, UN reform, the ICC and Agenda 2063 provoked extended discussions. This PSC Report reviews these and other highlights from the January AU Summit.  

The situation analysis examines the decision to halt plans to send a peacekeeping force to Burundi. Some analysts, however, say it is too soon to declare the AU force dead.  

Is membership to the AU PSC starting follow the same lines as the UNSC? Four of Africa’s heavyweights – Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria and Egypt – were elected to serve on the PSC following a vote by the AU Executive Council.
