Seasonal influenza (flu) and other related diseases have occurred in Ethiopia as a result of the current cold weather, the Country’s Ministry of Health said on Saturday.According to information obtained from various hospitals and influenza surveillance centers established eight years ago, the number of influenza cases has been increasing, the Ministry said.
The disease which occurred now is categorized under H1N1 flu virus, Dr Dadi Jima, Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute told APA today. He confirmed that the virus happened due to the current cold night.
The virus is not new and it has been present since 2009, he said, adding the disease causes mild respiratory illness.
However, if not treated in time, the virus can cause severe illness or can result in death in people who have severe TB, asthma, diabetes, heart and other related diseases, he said.
According to information obtained from various hospitals and surveillance centers, of the 32 flu cases detected last month, the virus claimed the lives of four people who had been living with asthma and diabetes as well as infected with TB, he said.
