Team Rwanda leading the way in Tour of Eritrea

After two impressive performances from Rwandan riders, Team Rwanda Cycling tops the table in team classification at the ongoing 6th Tour of Eritrea, running from April 19 to 23.

Jonathan Boyer’s Team Rwanda (17:10:52), sits, at the helm after stage one and two held on Tuesday and Wednesday, 21 and 35 seconds ahead of Team Selina and national Eritrean team, both from Eritrea.

Compatriots of Team Tsinaat stand in fourth place, also 35 seconds behind Team Rwanda.

Stage two on Wednesday was marked by a strong sprint finish, where the first 32 riders, including all six Rwandan cyclists, used 2 hours, 54 minutes and 24 seconds. It was an all-Eritrean show at top as Rwanda’s Jean Claude Uwizeye finished 7th and best foreign rider.

Eritrean Meron Tashome of Germany’s Bike Aid claimed the stage, compatriots Meron Abraham and Meron Amanuel finished second and third respectively.

Uwizeye finished 7th, Camera Hakuzimana 14th, Josepth Areruya 15th, Patrick Byukusenge 16, Ephrem Tuyishime 24th and Samuel Mugisha 30th in that order.

In youth classification, Eritrea’s Yonatan Haile (5:43:10) who won stage one on Tuesday, tops the table, 21 seconds ahead of Rwanda’s Joseph Areruya while Tesfay Mihreteab (Eritrea) stands third. Samuel Mugisha is sixth while Jean Claude Uwizeye ranks 9th in the category.

The five-day long Tour of Eritrea has attracted eight teams namely Rwanda, Egypt, Bike Aid, Amoro & Vita Selle SMP Team, Sudan, hosts Eritrea, Team Selina and Team Tsinaat both from Eritrea.
