Ondogo Ahmed, from north London, absconded to Syria and joined ISIS while out of prison on "licencing conditions" in 2013.

The North Londoner, originally from Eritrea, had been given an eight-year sentence for a brutal gang rape of a 16-year-old girl - but was released after only four years.

The dramatic security lapse has only just emerged after Ahmed's name appeared in the recently leaked ISIS recruitment fighter files.

Ahmed was found guilty along with three other young men jailed for a total of 62 years after they lured a 16-year-old girl into a flat in Crouch End and raped her.

The sensational ISIS registration files revealed that Ahmed crossed into Syria via Turkey on 2 August 2013 and took a new name Abu Yusuf al-Britani.

The recruitment document described Ahmed as a London student and 24 years old at the time he signed up for ISIS.

Security services in the UK are understood to be combing through the leaked files, reportedly smuggled out of Syria by a disaffected IS fighter

The vile sex criminal was killed while fighting for Islamic State just two months after joining the jihadi group.

He was understood to have been wiped out on the frontline while under siege in Homs, Syria on 10 November 2013.

Security services are now facing serious questions as to how a violent convict was able to leave the country and join a jihadi terror group.

Islington Police had even sent out an urgent appeal for his whereabouts months after he fled - believing he was "still in the N7 area" when in fact he was fighting in ISIS territory in Syria.

The case raises alarming questions about the ability of the British authorities to police its own borders and prevent dangerous criminals both leaving and returning to the UK.

Lord Carlile, the former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, has called for the case to be examined by the Home Secretary and warned it is "a matter of grave concern".

He said: "It is to be hoped that the Home Office will call for a report to be made to the Home Secretary about this incident and that there will be some lessons to be learned from this unfortunate episode.

"It is a matter of grave concern that somebody who had been convicted of a serious sexual offence was not only in breach of his licencing conditions but was able to leave the country undetected."

Authorities are also scrambling to figure out who radicalised Ahmed and whether he turned to Islamist extremism while in British jail.
