International Women’s day Celebrated Nationwide

Asmara, 9 March 2016 - March 8, International Women’s Day, was celebrated nationwide yesterday under the theme “Equality: Shield for Sustainable Development”.

In Asmara, the event was held at the Expo Compound and attended by Government officials, leaders of national associations, diplomats & invited guests.

Ms. Alem Belay, Chairwoman of the NUEW Central Region Branch, stated that the Union’s continuous efforts to ensure equal rights and opportunities to women have achieved tangible results. The ongoing endeavours are part and parcel of our proud political cultural history and pivotal in consolidating and broadening the scope of women’s developmental drive, Ms. Alem underlined.

Major General Romodan Osman Awleyay, Governor of the Central Region, paid tribute to Eritrean women’s vital contributions to the success of armed struggle for liberation. The Governor added that the PFDJ has been working relentlessly to ensure and promote equal opportunities for women to participate in the post-independence developmental programmes and challenges of nation-building. In this respect too, the contribution of Eritrean women continues to be laudable, General Awleyay underlined.

Prizes were award on the occasion to 566 outstanding female students who managed to score above 90 in the General Examinations of the previous academic year. Parallel programmes carried out to mark the event in Asmara included philanthropic initiatives and visits by women’s associations to orphanage houses as well as the school for Children with Down syndrome.
Similarly, March 8 was celebrated throughout the country with various programmes.

Ms. Tekea Tesfamichael, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women, presided over the celebrations in Tokombia, Gash Barka Region. Emphasizing the importance of education for development and self-fulfillment, Ms. Tekea called for higher enrollment of women in all levels of schooling.
