Press release from 12.14.2015 |

German Development Minister Dr. Gerd Müller has traveled to a three-day visit to Egypt and Eritrea. The journey is dedicated to addressing the current refugee crisis. Egypt is a transit country for many migrants on their way to Europe. Eritrea is No. 1 on the African countries of origin of refugees in Germany.

Minister Müller in Cairo: "If we want to fight causes of flight, we need to engage, where many refugees are coming from, even if it is difficult to us there it goes to a peaceful and stable development in the region In particular, young people need prospects in their homeland -.. education, training and professional services. There is not this, they make their way to Europe. "

First stop of the trip is the Egyptian capital Cairo. In an interview with the Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi it goes among others to closer cooperation in the dual training system in Egyptian factories. In an era marked by conflicts and instability region from which comes a lot of the fleeing refugees to Europe, Egypt is an important partner for Germany. The BMZ supports the economic development of the country, in particular through the creation of jobs for young people. Youth unemployment in Egypt is 40 percent.

In the afternoon, Minister Müller will travel in the Eritrean capital Asmara and explore there ways of fighting the causes of flight. For emergency, lack of prospects and the difficult human rights situation many people leave the country. So the exercise of fundamental rights, such as freedom of speech, assembly and religious freedom restricted. Main reason for flight for most Eritrean refugees is practically unlimited national military and labor service.

Minister Müller before its onward journey to Eritrea: "We can assist Eritrea to stop the exodus of young people, by improving the living conditions locally and also open return perspectives as possible We offer talks and explore aids, for example in vocational training, this.. but is only possible if the Eritrean government to initiate economic and political reforms and improving the human rights situation. "

In its exploratory trip, Minister Müller will meet with Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki and hold talks with representatives of business, trade unions, youth and women's organizations. He will also visit an international children's surgery center and the largest educational institution in the country for engineers.

The development cooperation between Germany and Eritrea has been set of 2007. The work of NGOs in the country is severely limited. In recent months, the Eritrean government had, however, increasingly shown interest in enhancing international cooperation, especially with Germany.
