The theme of the next African Union summit, from 30 to 31 January 2016, is ‘Human rights with a focus on the rights of women’. At the 26th AU Summit, elections will be held for the 15 members of the Peace and Security Council.

In 2016, the PSC will have to take tough decisions to try to resolve existing conflicts and prevent new ones from emerging.

The split between anglophone and francophone countries in the AU could resurface at next year’s elections for a new Commission.

Looking back, in 2015 the PSC made important decisions on Burundi, Burkina Faso, South Sudan and other conflicts on the continent, but with varying degrees of success.

Greg Dorey, the outgoing British ambassador to the AU, says there is increasing recognition of the AU’s peacekeeping efforts. ..........................
