New currency for Eritrea soon – official

Eritrea is on the verge of introducing a new currency that would replace the nakfa as the country’s legal tender, government media reported on Thursday.
State TV said the Central Bank of Eritrea has since issued a legal notice to that effect.
It quoted the notice as stating that the new currency will be introduced to the public in phases scheduled to last for six weeks.
It did not mention the date for the new currency’s introduction, pending a confirmation by the central bank.
The current Eritrean currency known as the nakfa had replaced the Ethiopian birr in November 1997 six years after the country broke away from its much larger neighbour.
