Friends of one of Calgary's most recent homicide victims are looking
to the public for help in covering the costs of a plane trip from East
Africa and funeral expenses through a gofundme.com site.

Julie Tran were discovered at home in Coventry Hills. (Calgary Herald)

Selamawit Alem, 54, was killed earlier in October along with one of
her clients, 25-year-old Julie Tran.

Alem was a professional caregiver who looked after people with
disabilities in her home.

"Selama was a kind, beautiful soul and had a passion for music," reads
part of the gofundme.com site.

Alem's son was murdered a decade ago and she has survived two bouts of cancer.

With no immediate family in Canada, her friends decided to take care
of her funeral and the reconditioning of her home.

An $8,400 donation from the Eritrean Community has the group nearly to
the halfway point of its $18,000 goal.
