Dozens of Eritrean immigrants and their families will depart by foot
Saturday for a lengthy walk from the Minnesota State Capitol in St.
Paul and St. Anthony Main in Minneapolis, among other sites across the
metro, for Martyr's Day.

A group will depart the state Capitol grounds at 2 p.m.

The Martyr's Day walk will take them to the Eritrean Community Center
at 1935 University Ave. W. in St. Paul.

The site, near the Menards department store on Prior Avenue, is
expected to host some 300 attendees for a candlelight vigil and
community celebration that begins at about 4 p.m.

The goal is to recognize the independence of Eritrea from Ethiopia in
1991 and the thousands of lives lost during the 30 years of fighting
that preceded it.
