*Two Symposia in U.S. on Eritrean women’s role in war and peace*
_WASHINGTON, DC _– As it celebrates the 35^th Anniversary of its
founding in 1979 and this year’s International Women’s Day, the National
Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) in North America will host two symposia
in March--one on Saturday, March 7, 2015, in Arlington, Virginia, and
another on March 14, 2015 in Oakland, California.
The symposia, with the theme “*Eritrean Women’s Exemplary Role in War
and Peace: A Global Perspective*,” will attempt to tell the dual
struggle Eritrean women, both inside and outside, waged to
simultaneously liberate themselves from foreign rule as well as backward
traditional gender discrimination. The meetings will highlight how,
against all odds, Eritrean women were able to transform traditional
patriarchal society and achieve major victories in terms of securing the
liberation of their country. There will also be presentations on the
exemplary role of Eritrean women in nation building and an opportunity
to hear from the organization’s members and leadership on the major
achievements of the NUEW in the past thirty-five years.
The panelists will address a variety of topics, from the role of
Eritrean women in mobilizing their communities, to balancing dual
identities in the Diaspora, and Eritrea’s progress in ensuring gender
equality and empowerment of women including its commitment to
international covenants, and the national efforts to reduce maternal, and
child mortality, gender disparity in education, as well as women’s
participation in elected bodies in line with the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) and more. There will also be a discussion on the role of
young Eritrean-American women and how they are working to keep the
legacy of their mothers and older sisters.
The agenda for the one-day symposia will be available a week before the
respective programs on

Attendees will be registered at the door. Admission to the symposium is
