Northern Red-Sea region: Endeavors to promote equitable distribution of health institutions and service gaining momentum

Massawa, 10 February 2015 – At a recent assessment meeting of the Health Ministry’s branch in the Northern Red Sea region in Massawa, it was stated that the endeavors being made to promote equitable distribution of health institutions and service are gaining momentum. In a speech she delivered on the occasion in which representatives of the WHO and UNFPA took part, Ms. Amina Nur-husein, Minister of Health, pointed out that remarkable accomplishments were registered in all domains of the health sector on the basis of active public and partners participation in recent years. To this end, the Ministry is exerting persistent effort through upgrading human resources capacity and making available the necessary health facilities. 

She went on to indicate that there are a number of programs set for implementation this year, including the putting in place of a surgery room in Afabet and Nakfa sub-zones so as to reduce instances of mother mortality during delivery and repairing health institution centers.

Dr. Yohannes Tekeste, head of the Health Ministry’s branch in the region, explained that extensive promotional activities were conducted for the general public with a view to raising their awareness regarding communicable and non-communicable diseases. He also expressed appreciation for the active participation the health personnel are demonstrating in the process.

In closing remarks, the Administrator of the region, Ms. Tsegereda Woldegergis, stated that the Administration would enhance cooperation with the Health Ministry’s branch in endeavors to promote community wellbeing.
