FLINT, MI -- Kettering University engineering Professor Petros
Gheresus will be the 2015 African American history speaker at New Zion
Baptist Church.

The event will take place Sunday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m. at the church,
1601 Chippewa St.

"He is just a wonderful person and a humble person," said Lillian
Henry, historian and chair of the Black History Month program at Zion.
"As much as he does, he still has time to help the children."

Gheresus was born in Eritrea, immigrated to the U.S. and received his
PhD in industrial engineering from Iowa State University. He teaches
at Kettering, where he is active in outreach and extracurricular
programs.

He developed the AIMS (Academically Interested Minds) program at the
university, "a free, five-week pre-college residential summer program
for students of color interested in engineering, math, science and
business," according to Kettering's website.

In addition, Gheresus is involved in the pre-college Robotics program
and started the LEGO Building project through Kettering.

His speech on Sunday will focus on helping children discover and
thrive in fields of math, science and technology, Henry said.

The event will also feature poetry readings and personal testimonies
from church members.

The program is free and open to the community.
