The accomplished Yodit Tewolde tackles everything in life with a
purpose. As an attorney, she’s devoted to helping those she defends in
court. Though her personal style tends to lean toward the casual side,
she’s much more zealous when it comes to her shoe collection. “Buy
nice, and you won’t have to buy twice,” Tewolde says.
Originally from Eritrea, Tewolde immigrated to the United States as an
infant and was raised in Dallas. After attending college at Texas A&M
University and earning her law degree at Southern University Law
Center in Baton Rouge, La., Tewolde headed back to Texas, where she
worked as a prosecutor with the Dallas County District Attorney’s
office.
After several years of learning the inner workings of the judicial
system, Tewolde felt it was time to strike out on her own in 2014. “I
remember thinking, ‘I’ve learned what I can,’” Tewolde says. “Now I
want to help people on the other side.”
Today the stunning 32-year-old splits her time between her job as a
criminal defense attorney and working as a legal analyst, discussing
high-profile criminal cases (such as the Bill Cosby scandal) on
television shows like NewsOne Now with Roland Martin or on Tom
Joyner’s nationally syndicated radio morning program.
Tewolde also established a program called “The Conversation,” where
she speaks to middle- and high school-age students about their
constitutional rights and how to engage with law enforcement
officials.
On the rare occasion she has time to kick back, Tewolde is likely to
be found at Avanti Ristorante on McKinney Avenue enjoying dinner and
drinks (in fabulous shoes, of course). “Eating with friends is my idea
of fun,” Tewolde says. “Great food, great drinks, and the perfect
ambiance … you can’t get much better than that.”

Is She Dallas' Most Beautiful Lawyer?

Yodit Tewolde might be the most beautiful lawyer in Dallas—a bold
claim in a town known for its attractive women.
But in a way, she already is, as Tewolde is one of the 20
semifinalists for D Magazine's 2015 10 Most Beautiful Women contest.
Readers choose from five profiles and photos on the publication's
website and vote on them each week. The winners will be featured in
the magazine's December issue.
And out of the first batch of contestants, Tewolde is the only woman
whose profession has no connection to the fashion industry.
"It's anonymous. I don't know who did it," said Tewolde, a 32-year-old
criminal defense attorney who practices in Dallas, was picked from 400
nominations. But she figures someone saw her on television and sent in
her photo.
Tewolde has appeared on NewsOne Now with Roland Martin, a show where
she's appeared as a legal analyst. She'd love to do more of that kind
of work and figures the contest will get her some attention—and maybe
lead to a full-time legal analyst job.
"It's about my building a brand," Tewolde said of the contest. "There
are other goals that I have in being a legal analyst. I think there's
a message there that not every pretty girl is dumb," she said.
A former Dallas County assistant district attorney, the job Tewolde
now covets is the one held by Jean Casarez, a lawyer who is a legal
analyst for CNN.
"I'm not necessarily looking at this as a way to make more money, but
a way to address certain stereotypes. There's more than physical
beauty here," she said. "There a lot of things that these girls do in
their communities that make them beautiful. There's more to it.''
