Most of the refugees who have arrived in the past five weeks came from war-torn Syria (35 percent) and Eritrea (35 percent), police in the Bavarian capital said on Monday. Twenty percent of the refugees were children, some travelling with their families, others unaccompanied. “Current international political events, and in particular conflicts in the Middle East, have caused a huge movement of refugees, and we have been seeing this in Munich,” police said. Officers have had to provide items uncommon for police stations such as diapers, cookies and milk to care for young children, pregnant women and elderly refugees. Several local organizations including the Munich Security Forum have helped supply police with such goods. Refugees have continued to flee to the southern German city after arriving in Italy, looking for a safe haven in recent months. Munich police reported in July that there had been a huge influx in refugees arriving illegally through the city’s central train station. One train from Italy carried 49 refugees, including 35 Syrians, four large families and 14 children. Many refugees are being housed in former barracks in the city called Bayern-Kaserne.
